Training
The Brain and Spine Centre is affiliated with the Westmead Hospital campus which is accredited for neurosurgical SET training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). There are 4 SET training positions (one paediatric and 3 adult) which are allocated by the NSA SET Board and a further 3 non-SET training positions that are advertised locally by the WSLHD.
SET trainees are exposed to the full range of neurosurgical procedures including cerebrovascular, simple and complex spine, functional neurosurgery, epilepsy, oncology, paediatric neurosurgery and peripheral nerve surgery.
Non-SET training registrars rotate through the three campuses (Westmead adults, Westmead Children’s and Westmead Private Hospitals) throughout the year. Further information can be obtained by contacting Dr Jacqueline McMaster who is the Director of Training and JMO supervisor for Westmead Neurosurgery (adults).
There is a comprehensive teaching program as well for all registrars across the three hospitals covering Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Radiology, Journal Club and clinical teaching sessions.
